A few months into my first teaching position, I attended an event to honor a teacher soon to retire. Her thank you speech included the statement “the students taught me so much more than I taught them”. I remember thinking that that was a rather odd thing to say.
At the time, I was too inexperienced to appreciate that each child in my class was a unique creation, a wonderous gift to the world.
Over the years, by the grace of God, I have learned to open my heart far beyond what I once thought was possible, allowing others to expose me to life viewed through their experiences. Through them I have seen family, joy, hope, fears through a new vantage point, and it changed me. Like the child Jesus, I have grown in “grace and wisdom”.
When one becomes the school principal or leader, the same opportunity presents itself, but expands to include teachers, parents and the greater community.
Today’s goal: thank god for being in a learning environment where Christ is the unseen teacher.
